The Cate Kinkaid Files
Lorena McCourtney
2012
Revell
Fiction/Suspense

Reviewed by Cindy Loven

Cate Kinkaid, just does not seem to be able to find her niche in life.  Having had many jobs she finds herself in Eugene Oregon, staying with her aunt and uncle.  A broken engagement makes her feel like a failure, top that with all the jobs she has tried to find and keep, she just does not know where her life is headed, so when her uncle offers her a job as an assistant investigator in her private investigation firm she figures she might as well try it.  Never dreaming she would find herself in the middle of a big mess, that involves murder(s) and theft, and all sorts of nefarious things.
Trying to find a young woman named Willow, she finds out that they have something in common, their looks.  In fact Cate is mistaken for Willow several times and it has not always been a good thing.  Once she finds her, she is told that the person who hired her uncle is not really a long lost great uncle, but an abusive former boyfriend.  However who knows who to believe, she has after all caught Willow in several blatant lies.  Cate does tend however to lean more toward believing Willow than she does the man who hired them.
Of course this is a huge mess and it is all tangled up with the death of the woman that Willow worked for.  Cate just cannot leave it alone and keeps digging.  Putting herself in danger over and over.
I loved this book!! Lorena McCourtney has written a suspenseful mystery, that keeps you guessing!  Just when you think you have it all figured out, your thrown a loop with another character, shifting your suspicion.  A great mystery!  313 pages US $14.99 4 stars

REVIEW The Stars Shine Bright

Sibella Giorello
2012
Thomas Nelson
Fiction/Suspense

Raleigh Harmon is an FBI agent with a problem following protocol.  She is a good agent and puts her all into her work, but the suits just don't care for her methods, and are putting her under a lot of pressure.  In fact she is given a case and told she has two weeks to solve it.  She has two weeks to learn the horse racing business.  To learn who is fixing the races and who is making horses sick.  Seems like it should be an fairly easy case, but that is where the issues begin.  It isn't an easy case and it is becoming more dangerous by the day, with a fire that nearly kills her, horses dying, and Raleigh finds that she is on to something that is much deeper than fixing horse races.
This is the first book I have read by Sibella Giorello, and I enjoyed it very much.  I did however get bogged down a bit in the story, it required my full attention to keep everything straight.  The mystery was great, the action adventure was good too, there were just so many characters to keep straight.  This author is easily a new favorite on my list, and I will definitely watch for other books by her.  4 stars 400 pages $15.99 US.

REVIEW | Death of the Couch Potatoes Wife

Christy Barritt

Fiction/Suspense

Reviewed by Cindy Loven

Life in Boring Indiana, is definitely not boring at the moment.  Laura Berry and her fiesty neighbor Babe finds another neighbor dead on her couch.  And if that was not enough drama for the little sleepy suburban town, Laura seems to find herself in the middle of all kinds of trouble.  She gets a letter threatening her life and her husband also, but she keeps trying to find out what happened to her neighbor Candace.  No one deserves to be murdered, not even Candace.  An explosion in Laura's storage shed, an electronic bug, vandalism at her husband's pharmacy, and being pushed into the path of racing lawnmowers, does not deter Laura from trying to solve this mystery.
This book was a bit different from Christy's other books, there was a bit of tongue in cheek humor, plays on words and names, and the characters were hilarious, and a bit too close for comfort.  They could have been your's or my neighbors.  A great story you will not want to put down, a mystery that will keep you guessing to the end of the book!!  288 pages US $14.95  4 stars.

Wow, disappointed it the first word that I have to say about this book.  A story that was really a good story ruined by the first chapter of the book.  I nearly put the book down then, but pressed on, and the story was good.  However, when I read a book that includes mild profanity, a drunken scene with screaming and slapping, that ends up with the heroine drunk and sleeping (in a purely literal sense) with a former boyfriend, I am disappointed.  PERIOD!  It ruined the book for me.  I am assuming this was intended to be a Christian book, even though I am not familiar with this publisher, the following story that mentions faith would indicate so.  I seriously hope this author tries again without the improper situations and language, I felt from the rest of the story, that she is talented with her writing skills.

I cannot give this book anything but a poor rating.  2 stars.  227 pages

Rare Earth

Davis Bunn
2012
Bethany House
Fiction/Suspense

Wow!  Combine action, mystery, state secrets, an accountant who fights like a ninja, and a bit of romance and what do you get?  You get an awesome story by Davis Bunn, titled Rare Earth.  It has been a long time since I read any books from Davis Bunn and I have to say this one was excellent.
Marc Royce, a young widower, has experienced danger.  And his skills show easily that he knows how to handle himself, but now he is in the middle of something that is testing every skill he has.  Sent to Africa, undercover in a private company, he is finding that something is very wrong.  Tribes are being displaced from their villages, promises are not being kept to tribal leaders, a man has disappeared, and the company he works for seems to have a division that is crooked somewhere.  Ordered out of the country by the company, he goes to Israel to help understand what is going on.  Once he figures it out, now he has to solve the problem.
This book is intense!! Just to clarify, the action adventure factor is HOT!, the storyline is intriguing!, the characters are totally believable and convincing, and top it all off with a hint of romance, and you have a 5 star story!  I loved the book and anxiously look forward to more from Davis Bunn!  363 pages US$14.99 5 stars.

Well Daisy Crispin is out of high school and sure that it is time for her parents to loosen up.  To let her have a life.  Of course her parent do not think so.  In fact they refuse to allow her to go to Argentina on her own, well with her best friend Claire.  A late notice from the insurance company that held her scholarship, has Daisy scrambling for another week of mission work.  She is sure she has found the perfect mission project, working in Argentina helping with VBS, and Claire will hang out at the hotel the first week, then the second week they will meet up and have a bit of a vacation before they return to California.  Of course Daisy is hoping to revive her relationship with Max.
And pure Daisy Crispin style it all blows up in her face.  Libby the leader of the mission where Daisy is serving, hates her, all the other workers turns out to be boys, when it was supposed to be an all female staff.  Another student who is there ends up being stung by a scorpion and breaking his arm, and when things just seem like they cannot get worse they do.
I love Kristin Billerback's writing.  She truly realizes how easy it is for teenage girls to find themselves in the middle of a big mess and is able to write it in a way that is understandable and humorous.  A great story that you will love!! I did!  245 pages US $12.99 4 stars

INTERVIEW/GIVEAWAY with June Foster

Hi June, Welcome to Cindy's Book Reviews, I have reviewed a couple of your books, but this is our first interview. So I am excited for my readers to get to know you. First of all tell the CBR readers a bit about yourself.
Hi Cindy. Thank you for inviting me. I am a retired teacher, mother, and grandmother. I have a BA in Education and a MA in counseling. I have to joke and tell people I'm homeless which is partially true. My husband and I travel and live full time in our RV. My sweet guy took the couches out and put a table and two filing cabinets in to serve as my writing area. I'm probably the only author you know of whose office is in an RV.

What made you want to write books?
Well, Cindy, I truly believe the Lord called me to do it. I had never written fiction or had any desire to do so until November of 2009. I had noticed a story mulling around in my head for a few years and happened to tell it to my daughter one day. Her casual remark, "Mom, why don't you write it" was the spark I needed. I knew that I knew I had to write stories about Christian people who struggled with issues in their lives but overcame by the power of God.

Has writing books influenced your walk with Christ? If so how?
Yes, definitely. I believe I have a closer relationship with Him now. For one thing, I'm still in awe of the fact God himself placed this desire in my heart. Now I see God as my boss, in a small way like my principal when I was a teacher. God directs and guides my every step each day. Many times I ask Him to help me think of a way to express myself in my WIP or make a decision about marketing. Without Him, I doubt if I could accomplish anything.

Share a writing day with us, what does it look like when you write?
When I first get up, I grab a cup of coffee and sit down to read the word. I wouldn't try to begin a day without it. My Bible time is a necessary connection with the Lord. If I've got a goal of one or two chapters a day, I try to write them before I go to email, because there's always something in my email that requires time, occasionally taking up the whole day. I'm a notebook person, so I have all my folders, three by five cards, calendars, etc. sitting by my computer and start in working. Since I've got a chatty husband, I stop numerous times to talk to him, but that's okay. He's a wonderful man. Most days I do the cooking in between writing paragraphs but am blessed to have a husband who does laundry. Finally when I start looking at the computer cross- eyed, I figure it's time to quit. So with reluctance, I turn it off but enjoy relaxing and reading my kindle.

Who are some of the authors who influenced your writing?
Before I started writing, end time prophecy fiction was a favorite. But when I began writing inspirational romance, I realized I needed to read in the genre. Gail Gaymer Martin was one of the first authors I read. Mildred Colvin was another. She writes wonderful sweet contemporary and historical romances. Though Fay Lamb wasn't published at the time, she impacted my writing in a viable way. Fay is the moderator of Scribes with ACFW and offered wonderful critiques patiently helping me learn the many skills involved with writing fiction.

Off the subject of writing, I know you live in an RV and travel alot, what are some neat places you have seen this year?
Wow, in 2012 we've spent time in Coaldale, Colorado, Cullman, Alabama, Pensacola, Florida, Palmetto, Florida, Olympia, Washington, and El Paso, Texas.

Back to writing, can you share what you're working on at this time?
Yes, I'm working on Deliver Us, the third in my Bellewood Series, set in the Pacific Northwest. This book is under contract to Desert Breeze Publishing. In the story, the heroine is an obstetrician who lives with the guilt of aborting her baby ten years before when she hadn't walked with the Lord. The hero is the janitor at the hospital where she works and is sure he can't compete with the handsome Dr. Jett Camp vying for Jillian's affection. Riley regrets his past mistakes, his time spent in jail for dealing drugs, but praises God he gave his life to the Lord while in prison. When he finds out he's the father of Jillian's aborted baby he's devastated.

Where can my readers find your books? And where can they learn more about you and about your book releases?
I'm happy to share, Cindy. Here are some links.

Thanks June for joining us at CBR, before we go one last fun question, If you could write about anyone in the Bible (except Jesus) who would it be about, and why?
Oh, I love this challenging question. If I were enough of a Biblical scholar, I'd love to take characters and write their stories, kinda like Francine Rivers. But back to your question. Maybe I'd take Martha, of Martha, Mary, and Lazarus fame. I'm a Martha as well. I'd like to understand her and how she changed after Jesus told her Mary made the wisest choice by sitting at his feet and listening to him.
Thank you so much, Cindy, for having me on your blog as well as doing your reviews. You have a needed ministry to authors who need your TLC.

Echoes of Titanic

Mindy Starns Clark
James Campbell Clark
2012
Harvest House Publishers
Fiction/Suspense

"Hostile takeover,"  those words are enough to make the most experience CEO's tremble.  They make Kelsey Tate tremble and much more, they make her angry!  Kelsey is on top of the world, she has just made Brennan and Tate's prestigious "Quarter Club"  bringing in twenty-five million dollars worth of business to the company, and Forbes magazine, just named her on their list of "Forty Under Forty to Watch."  So all should be great, however her friend Gloria is acting weird, and now some nut job just ruined her reception claiming that her grandmother was a fraud.  Yes, Kelsey is angry.  To add insult to injury, the word has come out that there is a hostile takeover in the works and the acting CEO of the company has banned her from the property.  She is not going to take this lying down.
A random phone call from her former boyfriend has them joining forces to figure out what is going on, and to try to find the famous bearer bonds that her Grandmother Adele brought with her during her rescue from the sinking Titanic.  However Kelsey isn't sure she will survive this investigation intact, emotionally or physically.  Finding out old friends have betrayed her family's company and her grandmother's memory really hurts, and when one of those old friends threatens to kill her, her faith in her judgement is shaken.  Will the Brennan and Tate company survive, and remain a family company or will the big conglomerate get the company dirt cheap?
Ohh I enjoyed this book immensely!  I normally am not overly fond of books that switch back and forth between historical times, but it was fascinating to hear Adele's story on the Titanic and to follow along with how her descendants are going forward in the company she helped to build.  A great story with a great plot, you will not want to put this one down!!  385 pages $US 14.99 4 stars

INTERVIEW with Alton Gansky

BH Publishing Group
July 1, 2012
ISBN: 9781433671425
400 pages/paperback/$14.99

Alton, what was it like as a writer to work with a soldier and capture the stories for the new book Hide and Seek?

AG: It was enlightening. At first, I thought my biggest challenge would be learning the terms and tools of the contemporary soldier. As it turns out, the great challenge came in understanding the soldier's mind and heart. A novelist must be able to see through the eyes of others, to feel their joy and their pains, and then put it on paper. In writing this book and the others that came before it, I had to imagine what it was like to leap out of an airplane in the middle of the night, to be hunkered down under live fire, to see a comrade wounded and killed and to stand on a foreign field when my mind was home with my family. Doing so gave me the new insight into the work and the sacrifices made by the dedicated soldier.

Jeff exemplifies the qualities of the 21st-century soldier: intelligent, brave, sacrificial, but very human. In my discussions with him I came to understand the split loyalties that every soldier faces: duty, country, family.

I tried to take some of the admirable qualities I saw in Jeff and put them into the fictional soldiers who risk their lives and transfer all that to the printed page. I could come up with the plot and the twists and turns, but Jeff had to provide the realism. The series of books has been a real education. I am blessed for having been a part of them.
Jeff, now that you are retired from active service, do you reflect on some of the stories that developed differently than what you thought they would?

JS: I don't think that being retired from active duty in the US Army has changed the way that I reflect on these stories, but it has given me a greater appreciation for the quality of men and women in the military. Now that I am a private citizen (so to speak), I have the chance to compare the work ethic, the sense of duty and the patriotism of the men and women in the military with the rest of the US population. I never realized how different many warriors are from the citizens that they protect and serve. I am also seeing the selflessness and sacrifice of the military family compared to that of the average family in our country and am surprised by these differences.

Alton, did the process or the relationship change the way you view those in the military and what their families go through?

AG: Absolutely. I always knew there was great sacrifice involved in being a soldier. Coming from a Navy family I even knew the families of military made their share of sacrifices. Writing about them, however, made it real for me. One thing every novelist does is to insert himself or herself into their characters–good or bad. It can be an emotional roller coaster. Writing these books has tattooed the image of their sacrifice on my mind and heart. From the beginning, Jeff insisted that we show the heroism of those who remain home while their husbands and fathers face death in some foreign territory. In the case of our heroes, they did not even have the satisfaction of knowing where their loved ones served. In many ways, they waited in the dark.

I've always admired those who serve in the military, but now I admire their families just as much.

Jeff, what are your thoughts on this?
JS: Writing with Al has been eye opening for me personally. He really gets it. I have never known someone to be able to pick up the dedication and motivation of a warrior and their family as quickly as Al. On a couple of occasions, I commented to Al that he writes like someone who has been in the Army all his life. He has a great grasp on what a warrior's family goes through when the phone rings in the middle of the night and they have to say goodbye to a loved-one, knowing that they may never see them again. It takes a special kind of person to be a military family and Al depicts that as well as anyone I know.

Alton, do you have some funny stories about connecting with Jeff while he was still in active duty? Code language?

AG: Mostly I teased Jeff about the superiority of the Navy or the Army. I don't think I've been able to convince him yet. There were a few interesting times when we would exchange e-mail or talk on the phone and I had no idea where Jeff was. I would simply receive a quick note that he was going to be out of town on business. There were times when we spoke that I was pretty sure he was in some far-off part of the world. I still don't know.

In one of the previous books, I had written a scene that I was especially proud of. I struggled to get the details right, to create a believable scenario. When Jeff was reviewing the scene he called to say, “You can't use that.” I argued that it was a good scene, that it helped the plot, that it tied up some loose ends. He agreed then told me to take it out. When I asked why, he replied, “You aren't supposed to know that.” I protested that I didn't know it. I'd made the whole thing up. He sympathized with me and told me to take it out. I've often wondered what I got right.

Jeff, what are your writing goals now that you are not in active service? Do you have more leeway/freedom to pursue some things that you were not able to previously?

JS: My writing goals have become a bit more ambitious now that I am retired. For the rest of my life I will have to balance describing cutting-edge military technology and procedures without giving away national secrets. (Some of those secrets I have sworn to take to my grave.) At the same time, I think the reader deserves an accurate picture of what life is like for a warrior on a dangerous mission somewhere around the world tonight. I hope to be able to continue to paint that picture for readers.

I also had to balance a very difficult workload of trying to communicate with Al and writing some of these books while I was away in Afghanistan or in Iraq. (Needless to say, my mind and attention were a bit preoccupied at those times.) Now that I am retired from the Army, I hope to be able to dedicate more time to writing books that will exalt the great name of Jesus and inspire readers.

The Amish of Webster County
Book One
Laura V. Hilton
Whitaker House
Fiction/Christian/Amish

Shane Zimmerman had an Amish name but he was not Amish, even though he lived in Amish country.  In fact his father had left the Amish to marry his mother, and while he had no aspirations to be Amish, he did love his Amish grandparents, and he loved working with the animals on the Amish farms, where he was called upon for his services as a veterinarian.  A young widower, he carried around a grudge against the vocation of midwives and their practice of using herbal treatments after his wife dies during her pregnancy.  He blamed the red raspberry tea she had drank, but it truth it was an aneurysm that killed her.
A reckless driver has left midwife Kristi Lapp laying critically injured along the side of the road.  She was sure she was dreaming about the good looking young man who had rescued her, but was surprised when he kept showing up at the hospital to visit her, and was also surprised to realize he was her new neighbor, the vet.  The attraction between them is measurable and the sparks fly every time they are near each other.  Her father Ira is determined to put a stop to all of this foolishness, he cannot loose another child going over the fence.
Laura V. The Queen by Steven James

The Queen

I have to say WOW!!  When I first picked up this book, my first thought was ohh man it is going to be hard to read it is so big, 500 plus pages.  Well I was wrong!  This book was awesome, it had my CSI stuff, it had my profiler stuff, the psychological stuff, all the stuff that I love!!  I did have to put it down and pick it back up often, because it would overwhelm me with the intensity of the story.  This was not a bad thing, it was just the way I had to process the book!  I will not go into the plot of the story in my review, I will say this was the first Steven James book I have read, and the first Agent Bowers book, but I hope it is not the last!!
My final thoughts about the book, or perhaps what the book represented to me,  I have always been the kind of person who always preferred to read the book instead of seeing the movie, and finally I have all my favorite type of crime shows in a book!! Great read!  4 stars.

This book is available September 2011 from your favorite seller of Revell Books, a division of Baker Publishing Group.  This book was provided for review purposes only.

Today's entry is another from the Suspense Category
Pattern of Wounds by Mark Bertrand
Wow another great Dectective Roland March book!! J. Mark Bertrand is a great writer who really presents a great mystery book.  I totally enjoyed the book, and while I was not overly comfortable with the portrayal of how the lead character felt about faith and churches, I did enjoy this story.  It is a book that is not read in one setting, and I have had many of those lately, I had to process the story.  It is also not a story for people who are queasy about death and violent murders, because those are both in this book, they are tastefully portrayed, with not alot of gore, but I would say not for the faint of heart.  All in all I give this book a 4 star rating, and my final thoughts about the book are that J. Mark Bertrand is another author who gives me my favorite crime show details in a book!!

Be prepared! This book will make your skin crawl! Literally! I started reading this book and I scratched my head all night long.  The power of suggestion is a huge part of that.  Reading about infected ticks and Lyme disease will cause you to itch.
Dr. Brock McNeil is a leading research doctor in the field of Lyme disease.  In fact his word often seems to be the last word, regardless if he is right or not.  And in this case he is not right, but he will not back down from his stance.  A crazed madman has decided it is time for Dr. Brock McNeil to watch someone he loves suffer with Lyme disease, what he does not realize however is that Dr. Brock McNeil is no longer in love with his wife.
A gripping tale of suspense and terror.  You will not want to stop reading.  Page after page you will be drawn into this story, you will wonder if there truly are people crazy enough to do this kind of terrorism.  I enjoyed this book, scratching and all, it was a book to keep and read over and over!! 352 pages US $14.99 4 stars.

Today's post is my review of Wonderland Creek in the Historical Category

Wonderland Creek

Fiction/Historical

Allie Ripley, is a spoiled young lady, who looses herself in books.  The perfect job she could ever have in a library comes to a sad end, when the Depression causes the library board to cut the payroll expenses.  Imagine her own surprise when she finds that she has invited herself to ride to Kentucky with her aunt and uncle, who are going to a spa treatment.  She decides the books that she collected for her book drive can be hand delivered and she will spend the two weeks her relatives are at the spa, helping at the little country library.  Her dismay is evident when she first discovers that Leslie MacDougal, is not a young woman as she thinks.  Even more dismaying is the fact that the very next day,  Mack (Leslie) is shot, and he and the elderly woman he takes care of decide the only thing to do to keep them all safe is to fake his death.  Allie is horrified.
A city girl dropped into the hills of Kentucky with no modern day conveniences, each thing she faces dismays her even more.  She learns how to manage without her every day conveniences such as electricity, gas stoves, running water, indoor toilets, lights. Finding herself in the midst of a feud, she is dismayed when no one will step up and help her new friend June Ann with her new baby.
I loved this book!!  First of all I love books set in the Appalachian Mountains, this area is so unique in its history and persona.  I love this story, and while Allie did seem really rude and spoiled, she was quite a lovable character.  I did not want the book to end, and hope to see more of Mack and Allie!  390 pages US $14.99 5 stars!

WOW! This book is not casual reading material. It does need to be said that this book deals with mature subject material. However the sad thing is mature subject material incidents, do not always apply to adults only. A story of redemption, a story of the grace of God and a story of the horrors of drugs, child pornography and child molestation. You may ask yourself, how does a story of this ramifications have a place in Christian fiction. Unfortunately in this fallen world we live in, horrible things happen to children every day and we as Christians can no longer turn a blind eye.

This is the story of two people, who you would never expect to find together, a successful artist, trying to escape the hell of the emotional darkness she lives in, after loosing her baby due to her own drug abuse. A little girl lost in the woods, trapped by her emotional muteness, hoping her mother will some day come back and take her away from the monster of a man who abuses her sexually. God in His mercy and His own understanding brings these two people together, not by chance but by plan, to each find their own healing and way through the darkness they are in.

This story will grip your heart. I cried buckets as I read of the horrors that young Kaylee faced daily. My heart broke with Sierra as she dealt with the guilt that she felt from her own actions. As I said earlier, not casual reading, nor would I suggest it for anyone under the age of sixteen. This book will heal people who allow the words to penetrate their hurts, it will cause them to look within themselves to find the Truth (Jesus) and to be set free by the Truth! Even with the tough subject matter, this book is not a dark book, it is a book filled with hope and a wonderful story of redemptive grace and mercy. A hard story to read because of the subject matter! A story however, worthy of 5 stars. 339 pages $US 14.99 Discussion guide included.

Lexie Jaeger has known all her life that she was adopted, but now her father has passed, and on his deathbed, he gave her a box, that held clues to her past. Having the letters in the box read to her, by a member of her Mennonite congregation, Lexie knows that she has to find out more about her past. Who are her birth parents?
Lexie's trip into her past brings her to the heart of Amish country in Pennsylvania.  A local lay midwife, is in legal trouble, she has been charged with manslaughter of a baby and the mother.  As a nurse midwife, Lexie can help, but Marta sends word through a friend that she doesn't want Lexie's help.  That does not stop Lexie however, she shows up on Marta's doorstep, determined to find answers.
Finding out what she wants to know is not easy however, Marta is very close mouthed about the entire situation, and what Lexie does learn makes her wonder even more.  Meeting a 'cousin' who is nearly her mirror image stirs Lexie to dig deeper.  The fact that the Amish, like to let things be, complicates her search.  Will Lexie learn who she is?  Will she find what she needs to fill that empty spot inside her heart in Pennsylvania?
I loved this book, it is the first I have read by these authors, and they just made the story come alive to me.  Firstly, I have always been fascinated by midwives, and I enjoy Amish stories, so the combination of my favorite things, really made me want to read this book.  The proverbial icing on the cake for this book, to me was the fact there was enough mystery and suspense to really draw you into the story.  Truly this is a great book, that you will not want to miss.  Fans of midwife stories, Amish fans, and mystery and suspense fans will all enjoy this book! Group discussion guide included.  321 pages, $13.99 US 5 stars.

Larkspur Cove:
My Review
An awesome book from Lisa Wingate!  A story of a mom finding herself in the middle of having to start over.  Her husband has left her for another woman and now she has come 'home' to live in her parents lake house to start over.  She and her teenage son.  Life is not easy, when you don't know what your facing.  A new career that she is so unsure of herself in, parenting an angry teenage son because his life has changed so drastically, dealing with a dead beat ex-husband who won't return her son's calls, and new friends.  Andrea Henderson is not sure where life is taking her, but she knows anything has to be better than the last year has been for her.
Mart McClendon is back on Moses Lake, doing the things he loves as a game warden.  Most of the old timers do not recognize him as the kid who lived there with his family when he was a young teenager and that is fine with him, it means not having to answer questions about his family.  His brothers who have passed away especially.
This story had me hooked from page one and I was sad to see it end, a great story!  I enjoyed the story and was thrilled to get to read and review the book. (Thank you Jim @ Bethany House)  355 pages US $14.99 4 stars.

My Foolish Heart
My Review:

Just when you think that Susan cannot write a better book, here comes My Foolish Heart!! True to Susan May Warren style, you will  fall in love with these characters, Issy Presley, who is bound to her house and small neighborhood by her panic and fear, Caleb Knight a war hero who has come to town to take the job as new coach at the school and to forget his past.  Two people who are bound by their past, who are fixing to find out that the past is not as important as the future.  I loved this book, Susan has a way of drawing you into the story.  You could feel the pain and agony each character was facing in their lives.  Most definitely a book you will not want to miss!!  363 pages US $13.99 5 stars.  Discussion guide included.

REVIEW | Submerged by Dani Pettrey

Book One Alaskan Courage
2012
Bethany House
Fiction/Romantic Suspense
Gotta say WOW on this one!! I have never read anything from this author before, but what an awesome book, cannot wait for book two in this series!!
The McKenna family works together, operating an outdoor adventure business, but they are also dive instructors and do dive work for plane crashes and other rescue operations, in their hometown of Yancey Alaska.  One big family, four siblings all working together as a unit.  They also enjoy playing together, nothing is better than racing dune buggies on the beach for this group.
Bailey Craig had vowed to never return to Yancey, her teen years there had been horrific, most spent in a drunken haze.  Now she has gotten her life on tract and has a doctorate in Russian History.  The death of her beloved Aunt Agnes forces her return to Yancey.   After she returns it soon becomes obvious that their is still an attraction between her and Cole McKenna.  She feels that she has no right to have a "happy ever after life" and fights that attraction.
They will be thrown together as they come to realize that something is very wrong in their little town.  A dead girl found with a scuba tank from the McKenna's business sets off an investigation that will trace to Russia.
A spell binding mystery, full of suspense and a great story that will pull you in!  I loved it, and easily give this book a 5 star rating!! 310 pages US $14.99 5 stars

A Hometown 4th of July

June Foster
Desert Breezes
2012
Fiction/Romance

Max Tate has always known he was adopted, but his parents will not tell him anything about his birth parents.  This leaves Max feeling like he doesn't belong, and wondering if there is something wrong with him, that his birth family did not want him. This quest seems to consume him.
Enter the beautiful young girl, with a bang-up entrance.  That is all you can classify it as, when her young niece drops her ice cream on Max's head from her perch in a tree at the 4th of July parade.  Lynn Marshall is struggling with her own insecurities.  The middle child she often feels like no one cares for her.  When she meets Max, she is automatically attracted, but a bit confused by him as well.
A wonderful story of love, redemption and grace.  You definitely will want to read this book!  June Foster has a way with words and she expresses her story very well.  Also I love that she addresses head on situations like depression, not fitting in, abandonment, etc.  This book deals with so many issues, and very well.  I truly enjoyed the story and wept along with Max as he faced so many frustrations in his search for who he was. 399 pages 4 stars Available online in ebook format.

REVIEW | A Season of Love by Amy Clipston

Book 5 Kauffman Amish Bakery Series
July 2012
Zondervan
Fiction/Christian/General

OHH wow, all good things must come to an end, but I am so sad to see the end of this series.  I really feel like I know Elizabeth and Eli Kauffman and their very large family.  I have to say, and I know I say it every time, but this book was the best.  Each book in this series improved with each story.  I love Amy's writing style and this story had me hooked from page one to the end.
Lindsay comes home from visiting her friends in the Englisch world, people who are like family to her.  However upon finding out her Aunt Rebecca was on total bed rest for her third pregnancy, Lindsay rushes home, and knows that this is where her heart is and decides to be baptized with her best friends Lizzie Ann and Katie Kauffman.  Life is changing for them all as they are growing up into young adult women.  Matthew waits for her baptism and then he starts courting Lindsay.  Lizzie Ann and Samuel Kauffman announce their intentions to get married.  But Katie feels left out, like a fifth wheel, she has no boyfriend and no real interests in the boys of their congregation.  A budding friendship with Jake Miller will lead to trouble, and lots of it.
This story made me laugh and cry, it was hard watching as Katie struggled to find her way.  Again this was my favorite of the entire series.  I cannot wait for the next series!!
Many thanks to Amy Clipston and Zondervan for allowing me to review this book.  No payment was received for this review.  5 stars 304 pages USD $12.99

Missing

Book One
The Secrets of Crittenden County
Shelley Shepard Gray
2012
Avon Inspire Books
Fiction/Suspense/Romance

Three young ladies, cutting school and hanging out where they should not, find something that no one should ever find!  After playing takeaway with Abby's backpack, one of the girls tosses it behind her and it fell into a hole, well actually into a old well, that contained the body of a dead man.
Perry Borntrager's had been missing for several months, but the community just figured he'd jumped fence and left the Amish.  No one dreamed he was dead and in their community in a well.
Lydia Plank had been Perry's girlfriend, but had broken up with him after he began changing, he had lost lots of friends recently.  Walker Anderson, caught him stealing money from their boss, but Perry threatened to turn it around to make it look like Walker was the guilty one, so Walker quit his job, and would not have anything to do with him anymore.  Perry definitely was not an upstanding Amish young man.
This book was so different in many aspects, this is definitely not the typical Amish love story.  A mystery is the way I would classify this book.  My only sorrow with this book, is that it is a continuing story and I don't know who killed Perry.  Looking forward to the next book in the series!! 245 pages, US $12.99 4 stars

REVIEW | The Gifted

Ann H. Gabhart
2012
Revell
Fiction

Jessamine Brady was brought to live at the Shaker Village after her granny died, she has tried to be a compliant and good Shaker.  However she is curious about so many things.  Things that most people take for granted, love, men, life in general away from the village.  Hearing about the resort nearby where the young ladies walk about the lawn with parasols, Jessamine really wants to see that, and offers to look for berries in the woods.  This whole escapade will change her life forever.  Finding an injured man and bringing him to the village, does nothing more than cause even more questions.

I have to say I  admire Ann Gabhart greatly, she takes a historical group, who are not very likable, the Shakers and is able to write a great story.  I have read her other books, and just come away feeling so sad at how the Shakers lived and treated each others.  I don't care for that group at all.  But I do like Ann's books, she goes beyond that barrier, making her characters very likable and realistic.

Readers of the previous books will be happy to read another in this series, and new readers will also enjoy this book, a very informative book about the historical Shakers, and very lovable and enjoyable main characters.  436 pages US $14.99 4 stars.
