Cate Kinkaid, just does not seem to be able to find her niche in life. Having had many jobs she finds herself in Eugene Oregon, staying with her aunt and uncle. A broken engagement makes her feel like a failure, top that with all the jobs she has tried to find and keep, she just does not know where her life is headed, so when her uncle offers her a job as an assistant investigator in her private investigation firm she figures she might as well try it. Never dreaming she would find herself in the middle of a big mess, that involves murder(s) and theft, and all sorts of nefarious things.
Trying to find a young woman named Willow, she finds out that they have something in common, their looks. In fact Cate is mistaken for Willow several times and it has not always been a good thing. Once she finds her, she is told that the person who hired her uncle is not really a long lost great uncle, but an abusive former boyfriend. However who knows who to believe, she has after all caught Willow in several blatant lies. Cate does tend however to lean more toward believing Willow than she does the man who hired them.
Of course this is a huge mess and it is all tangled up with the death of the woman that Willow worked for. Cate just cannot leave it alone and keeps digging. Putting herself in danger over and over.
