Samantha Waldron, her father and little brother are on the Oregon trail, they are heading to Wilmette Valley, for a new life. Adventure excites Samantha and each day brings a new adventure. However tensions run high as there have been many losses on the trail, and they trail boss seems to be very inexperienced and impatient. It is not long before they train separates and the Waldron family along with four other families are left to travel on their own, with Jack Doyle as their leader. Danger abounds and sickness threatens to overtake their little group, they do make it to Oregon, but Samantha and Micah's father dies from a bear attack on the trail. What will become of them, will her feelings for Jack Doyle turn into a lifetime of love?
What I liked about this book: I love this type of setting, it is probably my favorite setting for historical novels. I greatly admire Samantha, her determination and her will power to survive is unshakable.
What I did not like about this book: The first half of the book seemed a bit slow to me, and I really did not care for the character of the wagon master, Captain Ezra Loewe, he was beyond exasperating.
Conclusion: I enjoyed this book, it was a great story, full of excitement, danger, twists and turns! A book that makes you want to find out more about Samantha Waldron and her life after she settled in the Wilmette Valley. 326 pages US $14.99 4 stars.
