Lt. Mellie (Philomela)Blake is an odd one, always feeling like the odd man out, she does not make friends well.  A lot of it has to do with her upbringing by a single father.  Her mother died in a car crash when she was only two, so her dad did the best he could do, but she just never fit in.  Serving as a nurse, she is confident in her work, but her personal life is the pits and she has no real friends.
Lt. Tom MacGilliver has the same issue, but he is outgoing, always the fun guy, but never really wants to let people get close, after all most people are afraid of his just due to his name.  His father was a famous murderer that even little children made up a jump rope rhyme about MacGilliver, the Killiver.  Who can live up to a name like that?  Certainly not the little boy he was when it happened, and now even as a man, he is afraid to let others know the real Tom.
A pet project of the wife of Tom's commander, finds the nurses in the service writing anonymous letters to the service men, just like in the Jimmy Stewart movie The Shop Around the Corner.  While not openly excited about the idea, Mellie does it because her commanding officer pretty much orders her to do so, and Tom actually participates by taking a discarded letter, little do they know at that moment that they are both entering a new realm beyond each of their comfort zones.
I loved this book, I loved the letters, the stories that made Mellie and Tom, who they were.  I particularly loved the story of Mellie's scrapbook.  This book is my favorite book that I have read from Sarah Sundin.  In my opinion her best book ever.  I look forward to more of this series!  And while this book is a long thick book, it is definitely a book you don't want to put down.  419 pages US $14.99 5 stars
