Sadie Wagner, has always loved to sing, and now an opportunity to sing and earn money for her family while her Papa is down with an injury, seems to her that the Lord has answered her prayers.  Her Mama and Papa do not seem as sure, but allow her to leave Indiana and go to Kansas to pursue this new job venture.  Sending money home to help her family is her number one priority.
Imagine Sadie's dismay when she arrives in Kansas to find there is no opera house, per se, there is a cellar performance house.  Yes the mercantile where she is working has a cellar under, where Asa Baxter has dug a cellar and made a beautiful stage and performance house.  Sadie is stunned when she sees it for the first time.  The town of Goldtree loves coming to hear her sing, and she loves singing, so all is well in her life.  Or all should be well, however her cousin Sid is insisting he is in love with her, and making her very uncomfortable, and then Mr. Baxter makes her even more wary, when he demands she sing for an all male, invitation only audience, wearing a bawdy dress and singing un-godly songs.  Sadie is saddened and realizes her dream is fading fast, but news of the death of her Papa makes Sadie realize she has to take care of her mother and siblings.
This was a great book, lots of action, I could picture the Baxter sisters very clearly in my mind.  Kim Vogel Sawyer's writing really gives you a mental pictures of the people and scenes she describes.  Most definitely a book to share with friends.  4 stars $14.99 US
